What is animal cruelty

Cruelty to animals - mistreatment of animals, including homeless people, causing them to be tortured, causing them physical pain, suffering, including causing bodily harm, mutilation or death, harassment of animals against each other and other animals, committed with hooliganism or abuse. (Article 1 of the Law of Ukraine “On Protection of Animals from Cruelty”)

PROHIBITED

• beat, kill, poison or maim pets
• Donate pets as prizes, awards or prizes

• train animals in a way that harms the health of the animal and its general condition
• kill animals by drowning, suffocation, the use of electric current and substances that lead to poisoning

Managerial responsibility

Committed to the abuse of animals, including homeless people, causing them to be tortured, causing them physical pain, suffering, but not causing bodily harm, mutilation or death, leaving animals for dead, as well as other violations of the rules of keeping and handling animals entail imposition a fine of two hundred to three hundred non-taxable minimum incomes of citizens (3400 — 5100 UAH) with the confiscation of the animal, if the animal's stay with the owner poses a threat to its life or health.

Liability criminale

Occurs for the mistreatment of animals belonging to vertebrates (cats, dogs, goats, cows, birds, etc.) if:

Punishable by restriction of liberty for a period of 1 to 3 years or imprisonment for a term of 2 to 3 years with confiscation of the animal.

The most severe punishment is for acts committed with the purpose of creating, marketing or distributing products that promote cruelty to animals (film, video, audio products, etc.) imprisonment from 5 to 8 years with confiscation of the animal. (

How to act if you have witnessed animal abuse

• call the police
• if possible, stop the violator (without risk to your own safety) and assist the animal
• take a photo/video, find witnesses, record the address of the event - this will help in bringing the culprit to justice
